Overview of Services

Cancer Metabolism is a Shared Resource within the Sanford Burnham Prebys Cancer Center. The role of the core is to support labs in the study of metabolism in cancer by (1) providing expertise in design of metabolic experiments, and interpretation of results; (2) providing analytical services for metabolism research, based on three platforms: (A) YSI analyzer for measurement of glucose, lactate and glutamine in culture medium; (B) Seahorse XFp for real-time measurement of oxygen consumption and extracellular acidification; (C) GC-MS quantification of small polar metabolites (TCA cycle, amino acids), sugars, fatty acids, or short-chain fatty acids. We also have expertise and offer service in stable isotope (13C) labeling tracing by GC-MS. We have experience working with cultured cells, tissue and tumor samples, and serum or plasma. We provide detailed protocols for sample preparation, and have worked with numerous researchers at various institutions on cancer and non-cancer metabolism projects.
